LED or LCD? The most common signage decision, explained.
For most indoor retail screens, LCD is the right answer. For shopfronts, very large formats and outdoor, it is LED. The interesting part is the in between, and this guide walks through it without a sales pitch. We sell both, so we have no reason to push you toward one.

The short answer
Choose LCD for most indoor retail signage up to around 86 inches. Better resolution per krone, faster to deploy, lower power.
Choose LED when you need larger than roughly 110 inches, seamless video walls, transparent shopfront content, curved or custom shapes, or daylight readable brightness.
Between about 86 and 115 inches indoors, both work, and the choice comes down to budget, longevity and what sits around the screen.
Decide by size first
Size settles most of the argument
Nine times out of ten, the physical size you need decides the technology before any other spec does. Everything else, brightness, budget, lifetime, is a refinement on top of this one line.
Today the largest single commercial LCD panel is about 115 inches. Beyond that you either tile several LCD panels, which leaves thin but visible seams, or move to a modular LED wall, which is fully seamless at any size.

Format

Single panel versus modular wall
An LCD is one finished panel with a frame around the glass. It is seamless up to its maximum size, currently about 115 inches, and quick to hang. Go bigger and you tile panels together, which leaves narrow seams running through the image.
An LED wall is built from small tiles that lock together into one continuous surface with no seams, at almost any size or shape, including curves and columns. That flexibility is the whole reason to choose LED, and it is also why LED is priced by the square metre rather than by the unit.
Brightness

How much light you actually need
Standard indoor LCD signage runs roughly 350 to 700 nits, which is plenty for a controlled shop interior. For a window facing screen fighting daylight you need a high brightness LCD, up to around 4,000 nits, or a weather rated outdoor model around 3,500 nits.
Indoor LED sits around 600 to 1,500 nits, and outdoor LED climbs to 5,000 to 10,000 nits, which is why LED wins outright for facades and anything in direct sun. The honest test is simple, walk the spot at the brightest time of day and ask whether a normal screen would wash out.

Resolution and viewing distance
A large commercial LCD ships at a fixed native resolution, typically 4K, and looks razor sharp right up close, which suits price signs, menus and anything text heavy that customers read from a metre away.
LED sharpness depends on pixel pitch, the gap between LED dots in millimetres. A useful rule of thumb, the minimum comfortable viewing distance in metres roughly equals the pixel pitch in millimetres. Close viewing retail LED needs a fine P1.2 to P2.5, storefront windows P2.5 to P3.9, outdoor signage P4 and up. Finer pitch means sharper, and more expensive.

Upfront price and cost per square metre
At standard sizes, LCD is far cheaper to buy and install, better resolution per krone, off the shelf mounting, one box. For most in store screens under about 98 inches, nothing competes with it on value.
LED cost is driven mostly by pixel pitch and total area. Fine pitch is the single biggest cost driver, so a small, close viewed LED wall can cost several times an equivalent LCD. LED earns its price when you need the size, the shape or the seamless effect that an LCD physically cannot deliver.
Lifetime

Lifetime and duty cycle
Commercial LCD panels are rated for either 16/7 or true 24/7 running, with a useful life measured in years rather than a single headline number. A 24/7 install ages faster than one that rests overnight, so match the panel rating to how long the screen is actually on.
LED walls are commonly rated at 100,000 hours or more, and because they are modular you can replace a single failed tile rather than the whole screen. For a display that has to run around the clock for years, that serviceability is a real advantage.

Power and static content
At in store sizes LCD is generally the more power efficient choice, and running cost is modest. Large fine pitch LED walls draw considerably more, so factor power into the total cost of ownership on anything wall scale.
Both technologies can show image retention if the same static layout sits on screen for very long stretches. It is easy to manage with rotating content or a periodic full frame refresh, but worth planning for on any screen that shows a fixed template all day.

The honest caveat
When neither is the answer
Sometimes the best display is not a screen at all. A quick orientation on where LED and LCD are both the wrong tool.
- Transparent shopfronts
When the window must stay see through while showing content, transparent LED is a category of its own, not a straight LED versus LCD choice.
- Price at the shelf edge
For per product pricing across thousands of SKUs, electronic shelf labels beat any large screen on cost and coverage. Different job entirely.
- Very large, low detail
For a huge image viewed from far away where budget rules, projection or coarse pitch outdoor LED can undercut both fine LED and tiled LCD.
